TONY ELLIS

I think many people are born with a great photographic eye. They just are. while others have to work to develop and cultivate it. I fall somewhere in the middle. I'm always at odds with myself with regards to what I'm doing and what I think I should be doing. I am my greatest critic, yet I do move with a purpose. When I'm working, it is clear to me what I want to get.

Confidence while working tends to bring out the best in your team. especially the models. If they believe in you they will got to the edge for you because they trust your vision.

For the most part either someone will "get" it or they won't. Most people won't. That's OK. It doesn't mean they can't work with you. It simply means don't expect them to understand fully what you are doing but they can still support you. So in that case, I don't really say too much or try to get them to understand. I am very brief but confident and we move from there. For most people, that's enough and they trust you know what you are doing.

When working with a team, I usually pick people whose natural skill lends towards what I want. So it's not a stretch to get them to do what I need without much explanation. Same with models. I would pick a model that has a look or poses in a manner that I'm looking for. So I'm not really trying to change them, just benefit from their strengths.

I studied acting in school, then dance(laughing). That's the the reason I moved to New York - to pursue a career in the performing arts. So creativity is always a part of my life but its form changes often... Usually reflecting phases of my life. So now, it's photography but I don't see this as an end. Who knows what way I will be expressing myself ten years from now.

//

One of the most challenging things is keeping things fresh and interesting. It's very easy to get complacent once you get somewhat good at something. At that point, I usually start to lose interest. For me, it's a challenge to look for new ways to express a concept or idea so that it's just not the  same old, same old. And in many ways, that challenge has been a blessing as it's produced some of my favourite images.

I believe all artists are optimists deep down. --Even though many may project something other (laughing). You have to be. Even at extreme levels, no matter what the concept or medium, we want to project how we see and feel... and at its core, that expression and sharing is a positive human experience.

The end of civilzation will be caused by: Donald Trump. (laughing) JK. Complacency. That is how most fall.
