TIMOTHY PATRICK

My confidence stems from my ability to make my subjects comfortable. I create a very relaxed atmosphere, through laughter, music and chit-chat. I am there to make the model as comfortable as humanly possible so they are free of worry and are able to open up. With that foundation I know that I will have a great chance to create images that the model (and hopefully the viewer) will appreciate.

I have always been more comfortable around women, so I feel like my current work is a natural extension of who I am as a person. I would love to shoot and develop working relationships with male models, but it just hasn't happened yet.

Truth be told, I have always been warm and respectful to my models, making sure their needs are met to the fullest, whether it be a glass of water, their favourite band playing in the background, or more direction from me while we shoot. In the early days, I admit to fumbling with gear and allowing my technical deficiencies to get in the way of what now I consider to be a very relaxed, creative space (for instance - I do not recommend allowing a softbox to fall on a model's head). Luckily, I gravitated toward some truly generous women in my early days, women who put as much into a positive shoot as I did.

As a skinny kid, I was always body conscious growing up, and I never felt comfortable in my own skin. When I purchased my first DSLR I would take self portraits in order to learn the camera / photography and through that I grew to appreciate my body, and the human form in general. After that, it was not a big stretch for me to translate the comfort I felt with my own body to being comfortable seeing others in their natural state.

"Nudity doesn't have to be sexual, and it's not. When it is, who cares? It could be fucking beautiful." -- Hattie Watson

The talented Ms. Watson is right. Nudity isn't inherently sexual, but it certainly can be, and there is as much beauty to be found in a classic bodyscape as there can be in a scene of two people fucking (thank you Tumblr!). That being said, I am almost forty years old, and in my time I have learned that most people are set in their ways, especially when it comes to politics, religion and sex. If you were raised a certain way, you're probably going to think what I shoot is pornography no matter what I create. But I also know those people are not my audience. If your mother is an old-school Catholic, she probably doesn't want to learn you shoot nudes and that you've been published in a book of erotic photography. In any case, I shoot what I shoot because I cannot imagine creating anything else. No amount of negativity will change that.

One of the most challenging aspects of my work, but one that I'm grateful for is: How this hobby of mine has positively affected my relationship with my wife. When I first expressed to her the desire to shoot nudes it involved a lot of trust on her part. This trust definitely strengthened our bond with one another, and I think it opened up some doors that have kept things fresh and interesting for the both of us.

As a father to two very loving and sweet boys, I feel the need to be optimistic about the future. I can't imagine a world in which they will be made to suffer. Sadly though, I think humans have fucked up the planet to a point where I'm not sure they'll have the best possible future I could hope for. Seeing my fellow Californians change their priorities to conserve water has shown me how quickly people can adapt, so perhaps there is hope.

The end of civilzation will be caused by: Well, if you believed the Far Right, Obama should have ushered in the end of days. Since that didn't happen, I'm going to put my money on the Earth reclaiming itself from humanity bit by bit through flooding, hurricanes and earthquakes of biblical proportions until we're all in the sand begging Immortan Joe for water. I just hope that I have my Furiosa and our little War Boys by my side.
