RAEIN: TEN YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP

MATT: Let's talk about your latest self-released record "Sulla linea dell'orizzonte fra questa mia vita e quella di tutti gli altri". It's been ten years since the release of your first record. You have a lot to be proud of. You made an effort to put this latest record out all by yourselves, and when you look back at everything you guys have done for the past ten years it is very much a reflection of how you have gone about putting out records, touring, and living your lives. You call it your "fundamental constant during the last 10 years". Tell me more about the DIY spirit of Raein and why it is important to you?

GIUSEPPE: For us the importance is to feel free to do what we want to do. Nothing constricting. Freedom. And show other perspectives. We need an alternative, to make music and to see the world. And this is an alternative. There is hunger to check things with our own hand and our eyes. Understand how things work. So, no one is an intermediary between us and our music, no one is an intermediary between us and the experience. We need to stay on front line and see everything from here.

MATT: Self production is more than just a starting point." This phrase really struck me. Do you mind explaining what you meant about this?

GIUSEPPE: The point is to find more genuinity and less passivity. Create depth into Raein and between members. This is a good way to find them and make possible a deep ratio with what we do. In my opinion, it is good to make an album, to make music, to print records, with the exclusive help of gigs and ordinary persons all over the world. And it is a gift. Thank you. It still seemsl impossible to talk about this in 2011, and yet... Not all bureaucracies are necessary. Not all things must be rationalized. Not here. If we persue something, is the gratuity. So, again, freedom is the verb.

MATT: You're talking about freedom from a personal stand point within Raein, but I would like to look at it from a wider context. Recently there were protests in Rome and around the World against the economic situation and the greed that has arguably caused the problems. I know for example that. What are your thoughts on the situation?

GIUSEPPE: What is happening shows that the current economic system is failing and the whole capitalistic system should be reconsidered... at least. The protests in Rome and everywhere else are the direct consequence of this situation...the situation is no more sustainable.

MATT: It always seems like your live shows are just a wild fun time. The last time we chatted back in 2009 you mentioned seeing Bjork outside of a super market in Reykjavik while you were touring Iceland. How did your recent Eastern European tour go? Anything out of the ordinary?

GIUSEPPE: Wonderful, the first time for Raein in Eastern Europe and everything has been great. Let me think...mm...yes. But I can't write of that, here.
