LUKAS MARTIN

Lukas Martin actually is an alias. It basically gave me the freedom to start all over again and focus on a specific style of photography. Now it's really easy for me to put my work on social media without the feeling I have to justify it to someone. However it came with the huge drawback: you have to find models who want to work with a photographer who really hasn't got a big portfolio. Luckily my way of shooting seems to be "refreshing" for models, so that drawback quickly faded away.

I think confidence comes with a clear vision. For years I have struggled with finding my own style. If you go look on social media you'll find a lot of great photographers and models and it's easy to fall into the trap of trying to recreate something. Soon, if you're critical, you will probably fail because you're trying to do something which might not be what you can do best. Ever since I knew what my style would be, I felt pretty confident. Of course getting positive feedback from respected models and photographers works as well. : )

I find it fun and challenging shooting woman. Every photoshoot will be different because of the personality of your model. Actually, I prefer to talk about a collaboration rather than a photoshoot, 'cause you are both working to get an awesome end result. Why women? It's because a photo of a woman can give the the wow-feeling, which I just don't have with men.

Absolutely vital is to have an easy going model who doesn't take herself too seriously. It's also key to have a model who likes my type of photos, I'm not really going for "Barbie-style-photos." If the model has got some stretch-marks, I won't Photoshop it as I think it makes the photo more interesting.

I will always check out their Instagram profiles, most of the time it gives me a good impression of what the model is like. Often there will be photos which trigger me asking the model to shoot. So I guess I prefer the case-by-case method. : )

I think it's important that you can place stuff into perspective. If you're a control freak, you'll soon probably find a lot is going wrong. I try to go with the flow and make the best out of each situation. There are too many complainers already. :)

Persistence is not given to everyone, but I'm surrounded by pretty persistent people. Photography wise I think a portfolio tells a lot about a photographer. A consistent feel and look go hand in hand with a persistent photographer.

In my portfolio you'll find a lot of lingerie photos. However, I'm not a fan at all of the classic boudoir shots with stockings and stuff like that. I think those photos end up to be boring pretty quickly. I prefer something more cheeky. I wouldn't be comfortable with shooting fashion-style photos. I do really like Lara Jade's fashion photos, but I don't think I can pull that off.

One of the most challenging aspects of my work, but one that I'm grateful for is: Working with difficult light. In the past I always found it a struggle to cope with the Belgian weather. Light never seemed to be ideal. My current pictures can be a bit moody due to the lighting conditions, I embraced the difficult light and used it to define my style.

Absolutely [I am optimistic about the future], getting a lot of requests of interesting models to shoot, so expect a lot of new work coming up in the forthcoming months. To get my portfolio to a higher level I'll look for a lot of diversity in models. So I'll look into working together with models from France, Holland and Germany!

The end of civilzation will be caused by: Space Invaders, obviously.
