ON HOMETOWNS.
I grew up in Auburn, WA practically my whole life and I have to say it's been a good place to live. It's a suburb of the Seattle/Tacoma area which is nice having such large cities close by to photograph/meet clients in. Photography-wise it's been great because of all the different types of locations nearby to shoot at. Within a 20 mile radius I have access to a small beach, woods, fields, towns, industrial areas, etc. It's pretty awesome.

Looking at your journey from where you began with taking photos of your car with a friend in high school to where you are now, how has photography influenced your life? What does photographing mean to you?

k

Photography has definitely influenced my life in a big way. It's allowed me to travel around the United States (hopefully soon the world) while meeting an immense amount of amazing people, some of which are now my closest friends. Everyone dreams of doing something they love for a living and for me that's photography. It's super cliché, but if someone were to tell me four years ago what I've accomplished now and what I'm currently doing I would have laughed in their face. It's really awesome how things like this work out and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

As I understand it you're studying accounting and economics. How has that influenced not only your photography but also how you go about your business?

k

Yep! Accounting, finance and economics actually. It hasn't really influenced my photography at all but it's definitely influence the manner in how I run my business. I keep track of pretty much everything down to the smallest details (like most accountants do, we're nerds), which is very helpful in the long run, in my opinion. Everyone hates taxes, however I actually really enjoy them (if I were to go into accounting I would definitely become a tax accountant) and of course that's always a valuable piece of knowledge to have when running your own business. All in all, it's mainly just helped me make better financial decisions for my business.

I've noticed the majority of your work is done outdoors with more of an emphasis on rural settings rather than urban. What was your motivation behind that? Does your upbringing in Washington play a factor in that?

k

Well Washington, after all, is The Evergreen State so growing up here has played a huge factor in that. Especially in a sense that, these types of areas are everywhere around here. So when I first started taking pictures, the first place that popped in my head to shoot at would be somewhere with trees/grass/fields/bushes/etc. Lately I've been wanting to get away from that sort of scenery just because it does get played out after awhile but I don't think I would ever stop shooting there for good.
