GUILLAUME GAUBERT

I am not a very confident person, but always questioning myself. As a photographer, you often have to know exactly what you want and be confident about everything. But the thing is, at least for me, I am always doubting before and sometimes during a shoot because I have very high expectations about what I want. What helps me is remembering that I was happy with the results of all my previous shoots and even if sometimes it was not the results I was expecting, it was always something that I loved. Then I know I will get something special.

I think my confidence is directly related to my inspiration. If I am inspired, I will know what I want and what to do and everything will go naturally. Without, I have to think about it. My confidence wanes when I am unsure about my inspiration and the direction I want to take for a shoot, but then I do some research, look at other photos, movies, music, and quickly my inspiration returns.

[My work focuses on women] probably because women always played an important part in my life by not being a part of it. I only had brothers, so I grew up without having a lot of interaction with girls. They are a little mysterious to me and it attracts my curiosity. Beside that, I like the softness and power that women convey in photographs. Women always were a mystery to men and I like that, but I don't know what drew me exactly to women in photography; it may be another mystery for me…

Ironically, in a world were everybody is now connected, communicating clearly with someone can be difficult. A lot of communication is happening through messages, email, and Instagram, and conveying a specific idea or inspiration can be tricky. Beside the usual information I need to send, the most important thing to me to convey is inspiration for the shoot. In order to make sure everybody is on the same page, I often send inspiration photos and we discuss it. I also like to meet the person but that's not always possible.

I'm not a fashion specialist. I just know if I like something or not. I'm a very nostalgic person, so I really want my photos to have a timeless feeling. This is something very important to me. A sort of vintage mix between the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's without really knowing what era specifically, so I tend to look for wardrobe that has some kind of old style, with interesting colorus; eerything that doesn't feel modern. When I send inspiration photos to the model, sometimes she'd bring clothes and we'd look together what would fit best. I don't have specific types of clothing, as I love to change a lot since clothes are really important because they often make the artistic direction of the shoot. So, it can really be anything as long as it has a vintage look, cool colours (often pastel), and fits the location.

One of the most challenging aspects of my work but one that I am truly grateful for is: Going from a hobby to real work. As every artistic job, it's quite difficult at the beginning finding work and getting paid, but I'm grateful for that because it forces you to work even harder for it and it pays off well eventually.

I'm always too optimistic than I should be about me, but far less when it comes to the world. I'm not sure the world is going in a good direction and I'm quite concerned about what will happen, but I don't want to focus on it. Anyway, I have a lot of things coming up. I'm really interested in movies, and I'll be shooting a short movie in the spring. This is something I'm really excited about. I will also work more with brands, and spend a bit more time in Paris. A lot of photos are coming.

The end of civilization will be caused by: La bêtise (stupidity).
