THE COATHANGERS ARE A FORCE... LIKE INERTIA. Atlanta Georgia's all (riot) girl outfit THE COATHANGERS are hitting it hard. They formed under what most would describe as unconventional circumstances; they happened to frequent the same bar and would jokingly played together from time to time. Well, no ones laughing now, except for maybe The Coathangers as world domination appears to be just over the horizon. Here's what you need to know: They have a record out entitled LARCENY & OLD LACE. You need to get your ears wrapped around this record. It's out on Suicide Squeeze Recs (@SuicideSqeeze). Go there. Get it. Love it. These girls are work horses. Their relentless touring has gotten the word out: The Coathangers are a band not to be missed. Live fast. Party on.
MATT: The Coathangers, it's a pleasure to interview you. It's been quite the ride from your beginnings with Margarita Mondays… to putting out records, touring the world, playing tonnes of shows, writing music. It's clear this is all more than just a band. What does The Coathangers mean to you? THE COATHANGERS: Thank you, it's a pleasure to be here. The Coathangers mean: family, friendship, freedom, fries, pajama jeans, so many things. It's a force really.... you know like inertia.
MATT: It's refreshing to hear the Riot Grrrl influences in your music (and lives for that matter). And it's kind of fitting that you're playing DC tomorrow, arguably one of the birth places of the Riot Grrrl movement. What initially turned you on to the music and the ideas of the movement? THE COATHANGERS: It's weird to think about exactly what turned us onto the riot grrrl movement, I guess every person, whether male or female, can relate to the movement in some way, and plus it's just straight up original, cathartic and different music. It influences us to write equally original music.

MATT: I have to talk about the name. It's fitting I'm interviewing you during the same week that a group of my friends are pushing for reproductive rights and free and accessible abortions in our province. Coming from the bible belt you've mentioned in a past interview that the name has gotten you some attention. In some ways where I'm from a region that you could consider a mini Canadian bible belt. Do you have any advice to these friends of mine who are going out there and fighting for social justice? THE COATHANGERS: Good advice? Collect coupons, it really adds up in savings in the long run.... No but seriously we don't like giving advice but we are glad to hear they are fighting for a good cause.
MATT: Any Canadian connections? I can name at least one. You toured with The Thermals in Europe and they just played the Halifax Pop Explosion which is about a stones throw (and a short swim across the Northumberland Strait) from where I live. Any chance we'll see The Coathangers in Canada (not just Montreal or Toronto) in the future? THE COATHANGERS: Avril Lavine is our cousin. And yes we hope to play all the hell over Canada this summer.

MATT: Sugar Free Red Bull. Will it save the world, or ultimately destroy it? THE COATHANGERS: Hard to say, its all about the yin and the yang ya know...
MATT: Is world domination the next step for The Coathangers? THE COATHANGERS: Fuck yes.

MATT: Final words? THE COATHANGERS: Thanks so much! All our best!
PARTY ON
