A CALL FOR JUSTICE: PRRO FIGHTING FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS CHARLOTTETOWN - Prince Edward Island Reproductive Rights Organization (PRRO) calls for Island Politicians to consider the rights of women when spending taxpayers’ dollars. As the legislature reconvenes after the election, women across the Island are looking forward to working with a government who will commit to reproductive equality on Prince Edward Island. “A lot of money was spent in this year’s capital budget,” says Kandace Hagen, spokesperson for PRRO, “…and very few dollars are being spent in reproductive health. The government needs to reassess whether women on PEI have the same rights as women across Canada. Without equal and fair access to reproductive health services, they simply don’t.” To date, Prince Edward Island is the only province without abortion services. PRRO highlights that having to leave the Island causes problems for women of lower socio-economic status. “Women of all economic and social backgrounds deserve equal access to health services. It costs a minimum of nine hundred dollars to terminate pregnancy at the nearest clinic, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Similar services in Halifax are free with doctor’s referral, but transportation costs are still expensive and not all doctors will refer patients for abortions. Reproductive rights are a two-tier health service on PEI and we want to work with the government to fix the situation. “We would like to hear our cause debated by politicians in the legislature this session. This is an issue that matters to a lot of Islanders who would like their voice heard.” For further information, please contact Kate McKenna, Media Liaison for PRRO.
